1.
Folk from the Smoke With their ways and means Taking my decisions from me Hatching out their schemes Lording it 'round the land Splashing the cash Everyone look away now As they grab and smash Folk from the Smoke - Have taken everything away When the folk from the smoke Are chauffeured into town We'll lock up our daughters And batten right down They already took the mines away And closed the factories Put shutters on the high street And our memories Folk from the Smoke - Have taken everything away Folk from the Smoke Are coming for your pile They know there's money to be made By flashing a smokey smile They'll building us shiny temples That are fit for shopping in But they'll cut the Sunday services And every day from herein Folk from the Smoke - Have taken everything away Folk from the Smoke Are hacking into our lives Stirring up the population Peddling their lies And there's Folk from the Smoke With their hands in the till Taking all that they can get As they always will
2.
You've already left me once Then you came back home Now you've gone and left me twice Leaving me all alone You broke my heart I sent you flowers I guess you're going to come back any day You've got me holding out on hope Playing make-believe I've been fooling myself Since the day that you walked out Leaving me holding out Holding out on hope Well I waited five long weeks That soon became five years And when I take that call from you I'll be holding back the tears My heart is still broken I'm still sending you flowers I'm half expecting to see you any day My powers of persuasion Worked the first time round I'd ask you to look into my eyes But you're nowhere to be found You're heart must be made of stone Returning wilted flowers But I remain optimistic to this day
3.
Too many people in this world Run out of luck before they are born Into a life not safe from harm And how many people in this town Would help a man up if he were down Would drop a coin into his cup Give him the time of day Or would too many people just look away? Too much conflict in this world The youth them get killed, families deprived Nothing is gained when choosing a side And how many times must it be seen To make you turn on, make you tune in Make you drop everything And turn the volume up Or have too many people given up? Too many people just seem confused They don't know what's good, don't know what's bad Ever make you feel like you've been had? And how many people would it take To say enough is enough, Can't take any more of your promises That always turn into lies When will too many people realise?
4.
The leafless trees bear witness To the bloodstained fields of snow Just like watercolours weeping Into the frozen earth below Like memories that fade with time And stories that cease to be When there's no one left to tell the tales That shape our history In the Winterland Where the poppies grow Give me the opium 'Cause the pain - is hurting so As they packed them off for Christmas They didn't have much say Armed with a bar of chocolate They were on their merry way Never to return back home Never to grow old Never to feel the sun again Always feeling the cold And as they march again Through pastures new Following last orders We watch history repeat itself But now they take their daughters Fighting for a land that will not be saved From helping me to ease my pain Fighting for another Godforsaken land Freezing in the fire Shivering from the cold Missing everyone Aching to come home
